MMA UGM’s Student Achievement

News Tuesday, 31 December 2024

Dinda Amalia Gumay or often called “Gumay” is an S-2 student at the 49th batch of Master of Agribusiness Management [MMA UGM] who has a number of brilliant achievements in the field of modeling and art. Not only has academic intelligence, this LPDP scholarship recipient also has non-academic achievements that have been initiated since elementary school. To be where he is now, Gumay has had a long journey with ups and downs that have made him more passionate. For approximately 12 years in the modeling world, Gumay explained that he often faced results that did not meet expectations and had never won a title. However, the experience taught him to never give up and always enjoy the journey. Finally, Gumay’s efforts paid off when she won the title of Winner in the Miss Hijabie DI Yogyakarta 2023 Selection. From this experience, Gumay learned that enjoying the process is the key to growing and becoming a better person in the future.

This achievement does not stop Gumay from dreaming bigger. Gumay has a target to join the competition at the national level. In 2024, Gumay was named the Favorite Winner of Emeron Hijab Hunt after going through a series of auditions and beating more than 7,000 participants from all over Indonesia. Gumay believes that, as long as we work hard, long-held dreams will come true in time. The long journey he went through not only provided valuable experience, but also knowledge in various aspects, opportunities to build relationships, practice self-confidence, and improve public speaking skills. “All of this has given me the confidence to share my knowledge and experience as a guest speaker at various events in the last two years,” said Gumay.

Although Gumay has a busy life in the field of modeling and content creator, it does not hinder his enthusiasm to continue his Masters Education. Gumay has been an active MMA student since 2024 and is one of the recipients of the LPDP scholarship. “I also continue to explore knowledge in the academic field by pursuing a master’s degree through an LPDP scholarship, which is one of the great achievements in my life,” said Gumay. Gumay’s background in choosing the MMA Study Program is because he wants to explore and develop more management knowledge in the field of agribusiness. This is also supported by his interest in the Master of Agribusiness Management curriculum that suits the needs with a focus mostly in the field of “management”. In addition, it is supported by widyakarya activities which increasingly make Gumay interested because these activities can support Gumay to know firsthand the various activities of agribusiness companies and their management aspects. Through the workshop, Gumay was also able to explore national and international agricultural conditions. Through MMA, Gumay hopes to get things that match Gumay’s expectations so that it can then support his future career.

Community Service Program of Master of Agribusiness Management Study Program

News Monday, 23 December 2024

Master of Agribusiness Management (MMA) Universitas Gadjah Mada conducted community service in the Menoreh Hills of Kulon Progo, precisely in Nglambur Hamlet, Sidoharjo Village, Kapanewon Samigaluh. Farmers in that location, farmers apply agroforestry farming practices, for example, sengon, mahogany, avocado, and durian trees that are tall, are planted on the same land as medium-sized coffee plants, and emponies. The MMA study program focuses on the cultivation of empon-empon to post-harvest management because this plant has been widely cultivated with several advantages, namely empon-empon can still grow even though it is shaded by taller plants, the selling price is stable, and does not require a special induction process. Furthermore, the empon-empon group has the potential to be developed as a value-added product.

The service activities were preceded by research on “Local Wisdom and Community Resilience to Climate Change in Kulon Progo” in 2022-2024 chaired by Arini Wahyu Utami, P.hd. and then continued with “Community Service: Agribusiness Development and Empon-Empon Value Added” in 2024 and ”Community Service: Increasing Empon-Empon Added Value through Making Ready-to-Sell Products” in 2025. This community service activity aims to train members of farmer groups and KWT so that they can cultivate and manage ginger and turmeric properly. The technical cultivation training process is also accompanied by agronomists who are experts in empon-empon cultivation.

In the cultivation technical assistance session, farmer groups and KWT were assisted to conduct seed selection, nursery, and land preparation. The ginger and turmeric seeds prepared were certified seeds. Seed sowing begins with drying. The drying is carried out independently by farmer groups and KWT who are accompanied through whatsapp by agronomists. Next, cutting and fungicide application were carried out, accompanied directly by the agronomist at the location. Land preparation has been carried out by farmer groups and KWT on a 200 m2 demonstration plot. In addition, seeds were also brought by members of farmer groups and KWT to practice directly at their respective homes.
After the planting is done, the MMA Study Program has a follow-up plan in 2025 which is related to post-harvest. The follow-up plans that have been prepared are as follows:
1. Continue technical assistance for empon-empon cultivation until harvest.
2. Develop a post-harvest activity plan (drying) empon-empon until the product is ready for sale.
3. Conducting extension activities on cardamom cultivation

Guest Lecturer : Consequences of Dual Certification in Functional Food Market

News Monday, 25 November 2024

Master of Agribusiness Management (MMA UGM) on Monday, November 18, 2024 invited Prof. Wirawan Dony Dahana as a Lecturer at Osaka University (Professor of Marketing at Osaka University) as a guest speaker in the Guest Lecture activity with the theme Consequence of Dual Certification in Functional Market. The activity was aimed specifically at Master of Agribusiness Management students and was open in general for S-1, S-2, and S-3 levels. Therefore, MMA facilitates hybrid guest lectures via zoom for undergraduate levels and offline located in the MMA Auditorium for postgraduate levels. The activity began with the opening by the Head of MMA Study Program Dr. Ir. Lestari Rahayu Waluyati, S.P., M.P. and was also moderated by Prof. Jamhari.

Prof. Wirawan Dony Dahana explained about the role of marketing in marketing, especially the marketing of functional foods that play a good role for endurance. The subject matter in functional foods is marketing activities that must be carried out by companies, one of which is by providing “labeling”. In order to understand more deeply, Prof. Wirawan Dony Dahana provided a case study in Japan related to labeling in functional foods. In Japan, there are two labeling systems, namely “Foshu” but it has not been effective and efficient and “FFC / Food With Function Claims” which improves the Foshu policy.

Based on the results of research conducted by Prof. Wirawan Dony Dahana, the impact of the labeling system between Foshu and FFC is not much different (in terms of sales). The only difference is the cost, where FFC is cheaper than Foshu. Furthermore, based on the research, it is also found that people cannot distinguish between Foshu and FFC products because there is no difference. Therefore, it can be concluded that the government (especially the relevant departments) should not provide dual labeling that has differences in cost and differences in complexity.

The Role of Academics in Agribusiness Management In Supporting Sustainable Agriculture

News Friday, 1 November 2024

MMA (Master of Agribusiness Management) academics synergize with Kana Cooperative to overcome problems related to sugarcane productivity in Agam Regency. Agam Regency, located in West Sumatra, is one of the sugarcane producing centers, but farmers face problems related to low productivity and yield. This condition makes it difficult for the sugar industry in the region to get a supply of sugarcane inputs and at a broader scope will have an impact on the performance of the sugar industry. This makes it necessary for collaboration between farmers, educational institutions, and government agencies to synergize and collaborate to overcome these problems. One of them is UGM through academics from the Master of Agribusiness Management Study Program, Prof. Irham, analyzing productivity problems and providing recommendations to improve cultivation techniques by introducing rigpit techniques. Ringpit is done by making a ring-shaped hole around the sugar cane plant. It is hoped that the ringpit technique can bring new hope for increasing productivity, as stated by the Director of Kana Indonesia Industri as a subsidiary of Kana Cooperative.
